Violeta Cabello (UAB) participated in the FAO Expert Workshop on "Applying social-ecological system frameworks to improve sustainable land-use and enhance resilient agro-food systems under water scarcity", 23-25 January 2018, Rome, Italy. The workshop aimed at enhacing FAO's knowledge on the concept of social-ecological systems (SES) and its application to complex problems related to food security in water scarce areas.
The workshop was organized in the context of the Urmia Lake Restoration Program (see: http://ulrp.sharif.ir/en). FAO, in close collaboration with the government of Iran, is applying an SES approach to understand the multiple and entangled causes of the progressive dry-out of the Urmia Lake. To support their efforts, a panel of international scientists working on SES with different frameworks and methods was invited to share and discuss their experiences. Violeta presented her MAGIC results related to "Operationalizing MuSIASEM for the analysis of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus of agricultural production in Almeria, Southern Spain" in the session on "Social-ecological system framework operationalization" dedicated to methods for operationalizing SES frameworks. MAGICs approach addresses the link between crop production and overexploitation of water resources in arid lands using MuSIASEM as accounting framework.
