Societal metabolism

Maddalena Ripa (UAB) was invited to present MAGIC results at several important events in China during the month of November 2019. On Thursday 14 November 2019, she presented selected results at the 8th International Workshop on Advances in Cleaner Production in Sanya under the title: 'Exploring complexity and contradiction in outsourcing: insights from a societal metabolism perspective'. The presentation showed the importance of quantifying ‘resource externalization’ in sustainability assessments of socio-economic systems, with a special emphasis on the situation in China and the EU. The presentation, which can be downloaded from our document repository, received the best oral presentation award. The International Workshop on Advances in Cleaner Production is a multi-disciplinary forum for the exchange of information and research on technologies, concepts and policies based on cleaner production. The 8th edition of the conference was co-organized by Dongguan University of Technology (China), Paulista University (Brazil), Parthenope University (Italy), University of Sheffield (UK), and Deakin University (Australia), and was held in Sanya (China) from 13 to 15 November 2019.  It drew an audience of more than 250 people from 23 different countries.

On Monday 18 November, Maddalena visited Guangdong University of Technology to give a talk on 'Unveiling complexity in Nexus governance: insights from a societal metabolism perspective'. From there, she continued to Macao, to present her MAGIC work on biofuels at the 1st International Bay Area Circular Economy Conference, 20-22 November 2019: '“Unbundling” the biofuel promise: examining the expectations around the liquid biofuels over twenty years' (presentation available in the document repository).

The visit to China has reinforced MAGIC's contacts with the 'cleaner production' community and has opened new perspectives for joint research.
